All Hallow's Eve & Good Food

Halloween was great, lots of people turned up to the party and much joy was had. Disco Jon repulsed all women, Gill was practically unrecognisable as a pink-haired punk, Antje Annie-Hall, Sandman Kieran, Hazel Hot-Lips, Ewan the Mac Daddy Pimp, Disco Daisy, Two-Tone Michael, Miggy Stardust, Mhairi's Bat Out of Hell, Velma and Daphne, Munchkin and Sharon's perfectt 70s couple and of course, Nigel's awesome "Play with my joystick" Pong costume. Smudge coped very well with the crowd, even managing not to savage my very drunk neighbour who chased him round the house for a stroke. Tidy up was suprisingly easy and the flat was in shipshape order by the time my mum arrived and we toddled off to the Good Food Show.

There was some very interesting things at the show, but far far too much cheese and oatcakes. We sampled lots of lovely food including some to-die-for Iberian ham, some gorgeous additive free colcannon from Mash Direct and a yummy black pudding from Ramsay's of Ayrshire. We also watched two demonstrations of amazing non-stick cookware, one Titanium and one ceramic. Both were pretty impressive in their non-stickness but the ceramic ones were way lighter. Overcome with show "must buy stuff"ness we bought a wok, grillpan, sautepan, omlette pan and saucepan which turned out to be not too much and almost 50% cheaper than buying it outside the show.

Next we sat down for out Winter Kitchen stint with James Martin who was hilariously funny, having a go at all the folk who phone in to complain that the chef's don't wash their hands on Saturday Kitchen, and Sainsburys, the sponsers of the Winter Kitchen.

Afterwards our throats were dry, so we headed to the drink side for the Gordon's Gin stand, only to find it shut. So instead we tried some lovely Sloe Gin Liquer, a very nice wine from Rickety Bridge (bought for further enjoyment last night), some Punk beers and two other breweries whose names escape me and some odd Swedish thing called Xante that was a bit pish.

By this time the doors were closing so we ran back, picked up our pots and took a taxi home.

Sunday we gave the pots a test run, frying an egg with no oil and it just slid off the pan. Then we put proper holders on the lovely deco quilts my Mum made me a few months ago, and went to ikea to get some of those hang-stuff-on-it tracks for the kitchen, my original hooks having disappeared into a black hole.

I had my one and only ski lesson, an experience I will never be repeating due to it's sheer awfulness. Then we went home and drank nice wine and watched Ironman.

Wet Weekend

Started off nicely, went to the pub on Friday with Anders and some friends. They put a significant dent in the Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild while I tried the Stars and Stripes and then the Hype. Much tosh was talked, and Michael should get commission from Apple for the demo he was giving of the iPod functionality of the iPhone (see Monday).

Saturday however was a wash, almost literally. The rain came down quite heavily on our way to Edinburgh, and while I got to do some wool shopping and picked up a nice alpaca/wool mix for Dad's scarf, Anders got stuck in a traffic jam and missed out on doing the aerial assault course. Dinner was nice though, good people, good food, good wine. So the day ended on a high.

Sunday was almost a perfect day, reading in bed with a cup of tea, a late breakfast at Cafe Circa (more on that later), a walk in the park then a movie. Anders went home in the afternoon and then I bummed around on WoW.

Cafe Circa, should be called Cafe Faker. Item the first, the "Original 1960 John Lennon poster" with the large "Printed in 1980" on the bottom of the actual poster. Item the second, the "Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice" poured from the carton in the fridge. Don't think we'll be going back there. The food was nice, but not awesome enough to justify the price tag.

This morning I rounded off the weekend by ordering an iPod Touch. I have fallen, I have left the straight and narrow path of righteousness and succumbed to the lure of popular choice.
